  Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

The early introduction of needle and syringe exchange and substitute prescribing helped prevent an HIV epidemic amongst injecting drug users in the UK.

However, it is an epidemic that has been averted, rather than prevented and we must maintain efforts to educate injecting drug users as well as improve the services that continue to prevent HIV infections. The HIV campaign logo, posters and information DVDs are designed to support these key tasks.

Key messages
The main message for injecting drug users is that HIV is still an issue, it hasn't gone away, and it is important that injectors remain aware of the virus, and protect themselves from it.

The campaign also seeks to encourage people to take enough equipment from their needle and syringe programme, and to make sure that new injectors are aware of the risks.
